Home/Services/Cedar restoration and wallpapering

Cedar restoration
is what we're known for.

Cedar weathers fast in Hamilton sun and Waikato rain. Bring it back to a deep, oiled grain finish without sanding through the board. Plus the rest: wallpapering, feature walls and full-room papering for residential and commercial.

Cedar restoration, the long way

Cedar that's gone grey or silver hasn't usually failed. The surface has weathered, but the timber underneath is sound. The trick is removing the weathered layer without sanding through the board profile. Done right, cedar comes back looking close to new.

The process

  • Clean. Detergent wash to lift dirt and old residue. Rinsed and left to dry properly.
  • Sand. Light, even sanding to remove just the weathered surface layer. Hand-sanded into the profile where machines can't reach.
  • Oil. Penetrating cedar oil worked in evenly, two coats with the manufacturer's drying time between them. We use proven exterior cedar oils, not stains pretending to be oils.
  • Walk-through. Once everything's cured, we walk the building with you. Anything we missed gets fixed before we invoice.

What we don't do

We don't aggressive-blast cedar with high-pressure water. We don't use coarse mechanical sanders that round off the board edges and destroy the profile. We don't apply oil over a wet or damp board. Cedar deserves the slow approach.

When cedar's past restoration

Sometimes the timber's gone too far: rot in places, cracking, deep splitting. Matt will tell you honestly if a section needs replacing before oil goes anywhere near it. We can coordinate with a builder for board replacement, then restore the new and old together so it looks consistent.

Wallpapering

Old paper stripped properly, walls washed and prepped, lining paper hung where it's needed (uneven walls, gib that's been patched). New paper hung with precise alignment, pattern-matched at the seams, edges tight to corners and around windows.

What we hang

  • Feature walls, single rooms and full-house papering
  • Commercial: restaurants, motels, retirement homes, retail fit-outs
  • Vinyl, non-woven, traditional pastes
  • Murals and large-format prints (custom paper hung by section)

If you've got a paper you've ordered overseas, bring it to us. We'll work out the run direction, pattern repeat and quantity before you commit. Better to spend ten minutes on the maths than to rehang a wall.
